South-eastern Morocco is a region of folklore and spectacular scenery, dotted with small oasis villages and quiet "earthen Kasbahs" surrounded by palm and olive farms. The South East has numerous eye catching landscapes extending from the provincial capital city Errachidia to Merzouga and Taous.
The natural “Blue Springs” at Meski lay 20km from Errachidia. A drive of 45minutes along the same route will get you to the amazing city of Erfoud which has good traditional and modern hotels, Kasbahs, and fossils. Next, passing Erfoud and heading to Rissani, you will visit the the “Donkey market” and “Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Sheriff ” founder of the Alawite dynasty that is still ruling Morocco. Driving about 36 km to the southeast of Rissani, will get you to Merzouga and its golden sand dunes for a wonderful and peaceful day. The earthen village of Merzouga lies about 500Km from Marrakesh or Fez. Many tourists gather here for camping, celebrating Christmas, riding camels on dunes and watching the alluring view of sunsets and sunrises on the higher golden landscape. West of Merzouga, there is a seasonal "lake", where various kinds of animals especially birds flock. The "annual festival" of "ismkhan’’ (Gnawa) is held every August 8th in Khamlia, located 6km from Merzouga.
